The Course

After a great week at the Major League All-Star festivities (I wonder how far Giancarlo Stanton could hit a driver), there was just one last thing to do before heading back to the dry desert. That would be getting an early-morning round in at Southern California’s top golf resort, Aviara Golf Club, home of the LPGA Kia Classic. This course must look amazing during the TV coverage, with pristine lakes and scenic waterfall features throughout. I’ll make sure to catch it next spring.

The Course

According to the United States Geological Survey, the state of Florida is 18.5% water. And according to my personal research, 50% of that area can be found at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge. Trust me. Some form of water is in play on 10 of the 18 holes, and you will find it. There is greenside water, long carries over water, water to the left, water to the right. There is nowhere to hide, it will get you. Fortunately only the water is dangerous, as I only saw one baby alligator patrolling one of the 8 or so lakes. There are so many things to do on the Hawaiian island of Oahu that you can almost forget to do the one thing you came to do: relax. Between hours of beach volleyball, deep sea fishing, nightclubs open until 4am and the necessary trip to Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial, it can be hard to remember to come up for air every now and then. For me, golf is the ultimate relaxation. Four (sometimes five, let’s go people) hours of hanging out with buddies in the fresh air on green grass will ease any stress away. For some, golf is the opposite. The club-throwing, f-bomb dropping, cringe-inducing malcontent who swears the world is on a personal vendetta against him specifically through shanked 5-irons and bladed sand wedges. The Course

This round started tough, given that just 3 days prior I took a hockey puck to the gut. It’s not easy to get all that torque through your torso when your stomach is bruised. But since it’s a hockey injury, I can’t be too specific. Let’s go with the Rick DiPietro school of medicine and classify it as “General Body Soreness“. I don’t ever remember being hurt as much as when I play ice hockey. I’ve been hit by fastballs, crashed cars, skied and snowboarded poorly enough to deserve injury, jumped off roofs and probably a few other things, too. But play just two years of hockey and it’s sprained this, bruised that. Or I could be getting old… And actually once I stopped compensating for my hip being in pain, my swing felt all right. It was the previous night’s dinner that did me in on the back nine. It’s tough to survive 30 or 40 swings with a stomach that just won’t settle. I blame Greg for the restaurant choice, clearly he knew what he was doing. Continue reading Kingsmill Resort

Is an equipment upgrade worth it?

Walking into the PGA Superstore these days must be like what a woman experiences at a department store sale. So many options. Where can you even start? Like cameras, computers and dogs, there’s literally something out there for everyone. The golf ball selection guide on the Bridgestone Golf website gets more personal than a Match.com profile. Just like the computer market, golf clubs have gotten to the point where as soon as you place a brand new one in your bag, it’s already out of date. You’d need to add a new wing to your house just to store all the now out-of-date drivers that TaylorMade has sold this millennium.

The Palmer Course at La Cantera Golf Club

The Stats

Tee Time: September 9, 2011, 11:22, 99 F, Breezy

Designer: Arnold Palmer, 2001

Playing Partners: Greg Ryan

Tees: Gold, Par 71 (72.4 rating/139 slope/6,535 yards)

Course Handicap: 11 (8.7 index)

Stats: 93 (52-41); 33 putts; 9/14 fairways; 7/18 greens; 11 penalty strokes

The Course

The Palmer Course La Cantera in San Antonio, TX is an exciting one. It features massive elevation changes and stunning views of the resort as well as the San Antonio skyline off in the distance. Along with its sister Resort Course that once played host to the PGA Tour’s Valero Open, La Cantera is ranked one of the best resorts in the country. I will preface this by saying that my score looks schizophrenic for a reason. It was hot and even the wind was burning and I was largely hungover, so the first nine holes was just spent trying to keep triple-digits from my final score as Greg Ryan and his 33 strokes raced out to a large lead in his eventual 4&3 win. There, I’ve made my excuses. Next time I play in heat like this I will wish to see real snowmen, not the two I put on my card. Continue reading The Palmer Course at La Cantera Golf Club
